Lovely new Xbox game, this, and a welcome return for the psuedopods it is too! It's hugely atmospheric, and manages to do a number of things very well. Take, for example, the opening sequence that ends up with you facing a number of The Great Race armed only with your rapidly depleting sanity. This theme of facing foes and not having anything to defend yourself with continues throughout the game - Your character didn't go armed, as he only thought he was doing a simple missing-persons case. Oh how foolish. It's only in the second half of the game that you manage to catch your breath and grab some shooty bangs, but even then ammo is in a shorter supply that females in a roleplay group. This leads to some excellent sequences - The game is based upon Shadow Over Innsmouth, and there's a fantastically sensation of panic in the recreation of one sequence. Heavily armed bad "guys" are smashing their way through doors towards you, and you desperately run from room to room, trying to block the doors behind you as you flee. The main problem I've found so far is that the game is too dark. I know it's supposed to be like that, and it makes things quite scary but, sometimes during the run-for-your-life sequences, you can't tell quite where you're meant to be going. The game is also extremely linear, but this does mean they can offer a tightly focused game. Some people have complained because, as the game is in the first person, they were expecting an all-action FPS, but those people are fools. It has enough one-more-go addiction about it to drag me away from Civ IV for a while, so it must be doing something right! I'll be interested to see how closely it sticks to the original Lovecraft story - So far there are a few divertions here and there, and I'm concerned that they'll try to fit as many Mythos creatures as they can. So far, we've had The Great Race AND a possible Shoggoth, as well as hints of the creatures from the Innsmouth story. Nicely, for those of you who've read the tale, if you look carefully at some of the locals, you can see what you'd expect to see. Very enjoyable stuff so far, and it seems there are several more CoC games in the pipeline...

Have you tried turning up the brightness knob on your monitor ? |
My pirate name is: Dirty Tom Kidd You're the pirate everyone else wants to throw in the ocean -- not to get rid of you, you understand; just to get rid of the smell. Even though you're not always the traditional swaggering gallant, your steadiness and planning make you a fine, reliable pirate. Arr!

Actually, at the start of play you adjust the brightness of the game to a recommended level - A level so goddamned dark that I might as well be Stevie Wonder. |

Yes - It wasn't very good. Neither is the Alone In The Dark movie. |

Has anyone got a Cthulhu rulebook I can borrow for a few weeks? I've got a PDF version, but a hard copy would be handy while I get to grips with it. |

Now it turns out that they're using the Nemesis rules - A variant on Godlike and Wild Talents. Good stuff they are too. You can pinch them for free of the ArcDream website. |

Yup it's the Nemesis rules, but the D20 handbook will have some useful background reading since I haven't read any H.P. Lovecraft. |

That's naughty. Get yourself a copy of the lovely Necronomicon collection of all his best works that came out recently. It's only 2p. Plus a bit more. |
